John’s biggest audience was 24,000 at a City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra outdoor concert where he not only conducted but also compered “off the cuff” an evening of music inspired by sport. John has conducted the RPO many times including the first Classic FM “Hall of Fame” concert. He has given concerts with the LPO, Ulster Orchestra and recorded with the BBC Symphony Orchestra and the Philharmonia. He has also worked with the Portugeuse Symphony Orchestra, the Georges Enescu Philharmonic in Bucharest and the Concertgebouw, Amsterdam.
He recorded Bruckner's Ninth Symphony, with completion of the Finale by Nors Josephson, for Danacord with the Aarhus Symphony Orchestra, a disc of the string concertos by Arthur Benjamin with the Royal Sccotish National Orchestra on Dutton Epoch and two Mozart Piano Concertos with Idil Biret and the London Mozart Players.
Worthing Symphony Orchestra – for whom John has been Principal Conductor for nearly twenty years – has earned much critical plaudits for their top quality performances in the acoustically stunning Assembly Hall in central Worthing. Their 2017 season has included a performance of the Beethoven Violin Concerto with Nicola Benedetti, Szymanowski's 1st Violin Concerto with Tasmin Little and a free Schools Concert for over 800 schoolchildren. On April 2nd 2017 they give the World Premiere of Paul Lewis's Concerto for Wurtlitzer and orchestra with acclaimed Theatre Organist Richard Hills.
John is a passionate advocate of British music and has performed many neglected British works including William Alwyn's Third Symphony with the BBC Concert Orchestra, a complete cycle of the Malcolm Arnold symphonies with Ealing Symphony Orchestra, Edmund Rubbra's Fourth Symphony with Worthing Symphony Orchestra and Doreen Carwithen's Piano Concerto, with pianist Anthony Hewitt, at both Worthing and the Ulverston International Festival.
John Gibbons and his orchestra touched upon all the intrinsic energy, colour, sweetness and anger to be found in this work, and delivered their performance with total commitment and superb musicianship".
