John has conducted operas across the globe, but built his reputation through the many shows he conducted at Opera Holland Park: these included the British revivals of Cilea’s“Adrianna Lecouvreur” with Rosalind Plowright as La Principessa, Mascagni’s “Iris” – a performance which prompted the critic Michael Kennedy to totally revise his previously low opinion of the work – and Cilea’s“L’Arlesianna”. John also conducted many performances of Puccini and Verdi including highly acclaimed performances of“Macbeth” and “La Fanciulla del West”.

John has produced a number of orchestral reductions of operas including the critically acclaimed “Troilus & Cressida”by William Walton for Opera Theatre of St. Louis in conjunction with the William Walton Trust. Others include a cheeky re-orchestration of Offenbach’s “Robinson Crusoe” for Opera della Luna and Thomas Arne’s “Thomas & Sally”.
